Who is Goddess Sarasvati?

Sarasvati is the goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. She forms one third of the divine Tridevi, the trinity of Sarasvati, Lakshmi, and Parvati, who help the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara to create, maintain, and regenerate the universe respectively.

She is the consort of Lord Brahma, the creator, and is said to be the source of His power, without Sarasvati, Brahma remains dormant and unable to create. She possesses the Rajoguna, the quality of creative energy and inspired action that drives all manifestation.

या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना॥

Sarasvati is portrayed as a gracious goddess seated upon a pure white lotus, clothed in white, symbolising the pure illumination of truth and knowledge. She holds a veena (the divine lute), a book of the Vedas, and a string of crystal beads, representing the arts, wisdom, and the practice of meditation and mantra.

Sarasvati's veena is the cosmic instrument, its music represents the harmony of all creation. She is the patron of all musicians, poets, writers, and artists.

Vasant Panchami

The festival of Vasant Panchami (fifth day of spring) is celebrated in Her honour across India, young children learn to write their first alphabets on this sacred day, symbolising the start of education.

The Sacred River

Sarasvati is also one of the three sacred rivers of ancient India, the invisible river whose divine waters are said to merge at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj along with the Ganga and Yamuna.

The Tridevi

As one of the three great goddesses, alongside Lakshmi and Parvati, Sarasvati is inseparable from the cosmic order. Together they represent all dimensions of the Divine Feminine.
