Who is Suryadev?

Surya in Sanskrit means "the Supreme Light." Suryadeva, also known as Aditya, Bhanu, Ravi, and Vivasvan, is the chief solar deity of Hinduism and the very source of life for all beings on earth. He is one of the principal deities of the Vedic tradition and one of the eight forms of Lord Shiva (Ashtamurtis).

Suryadev is the chief of the Navagraha, the nine classical planets of Vedic Astrology, and is considered the most important element in one's astrological chart. He is seen riding a chariot harnessed by seven horses, which may represent the seven colours of the rainbow or the seven chakras in the human body.

ॐ सूर्याय नमः। ॐ आदित्याय नमः।
ॐ रविये नमः। ॐ भानवे नमः।

Surya's chariot is pulled by seven horses named after the seven metres (Chhandas) of the Vedas, Gayatri, Brihati, Ushnik, Jagati, Trishtup, Anushtup, and Pankti, representing divine music and cosmic order.
